New treaty signed at AUK-MIN talks

AUSTRALIA has renewed its Defence ties with the United Kingdom, with an historic treaty signed in Perth on Friday.

In high-level talks over 18 months, the new treaty was negotiated between Defence Minister Stephen Smith and UK Defence Secretary Phil Hammond.

The official document was signed by both men during AUK-MIN talks, marking renewed cooperation on defence issues between the old allies.

Mr Smith told reporters he would not mind if the new treaty was called the Perth Treaty.
