New structure for Health's main office

IN the next step to decentralise Queensland's embattled health system, the Health Department's main office will be streamlined.

Under the changes, Queensland Health's head office will become a lean and responsive single agency.

Three divisions and two supporting units will replace the current nine-division structure.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg announced the agency would step back from day-to-day operational management of health services and focus on policy development, planning and funding services.

"For too long, Queensland Health has been a large, inflexible organisation that has not been accountable for its actions," he said in parliament on Thursday.

"We present our vision for the future structure of Queensland Health and its central functions. The key is our focus on front-line health service delivery."

The announcement follows the restructure of Queensland's local health networks and appointment of new chairs.

The changes will come into play on July 1.
