New recruits slot into the Jets' line-up

IPSWICH Jets co-coach Shane Walker doesn't look at stat sheets.

He did not need to see that off-season recruit Ben Shea has rumbled for 147.5m per game over the opening two rounds to know the former Wynnum lock has made an immediate impact since joining the Jets.

"Benny is a good story for us actually, he's a two-time premiership winner with Wynnum and that sort of experience is invaluable," Walker said.

Stripped fitter than ever since his arrival in Ipswich, the Jets coach said Shea's influence off the field has been as important as his dominant play on it.

"He's coming off a serious knee injury where he hasn't played for a considerable period," Walker said.

"On the weight he played at with Wynnum, he's probably 15kg lighter with us, he's in terrific shape.

"He's a great fella to have around the footy team. He's just really fit into the Ipswich culture and doing a great job for us."

Another recruit who is impressing all-comers with his application and talent is five-eighth Julian Christian.

The youngster has already drawn praise from teammates for his early season form, and Walker believes he will only improve as the season goes on.

"In terms of in the halves, we've never had a guy with such blinding speed and footwork," Walker said of Christian.

"He's got a real instinct for the game, and he's only going to get better as he starts to find his place in the team and gain experience."

Shea's powerful runs and Christian's slick movement around the ruck are two differing but pivotal halves of the Jets' attacking whole.

Both will again be on display against Easts at Suzuki Stadium today.

"As the boxing promoters say, styles make fights, and it's certainly two contrasting styles," Walker said of the differences between the Jets and Tigers. "They're a block-for-block type set-up, and ours is anything but that."
