New pool approved for Orion shopping complex

IPSWICH shoppers should soon be able to cool off in a new pool coming to Orion Springfield Central.

Council has given approval for the facility, which will be located adjacent to the northern car park of the shopping centre.

Planning and Development Committee chairman Paul Tully said the indoor recreational swim centre would be a novel addition to Orion Town Centre.

"This exciting new facility will house a 20-metre long heated pool and will offer learn-to-swim classes, aquatic exercise, stroke improvement classes, swim training and aquatic recreation," Cr Tully said.

"The 12.5 by 20 metre pool will be located inside a 600 square metre building and will include toilets, showers and baby change rooms and will operate seven days a week."

The new McMahon Swim Factory pool would be located adjacent to Southern Cross Circuit and within walking distance of Springfield Central Station.

Division 1 Councillor David Morrison said the new swim centre would be a welcome addition for local families.

"This is a great win for families in the greater Springfield area," he said.

McMahon's Swim Factory owner Peter McMahon said after being approached by Mirvac, who owned Orion Town Centre, he was thrilled to be adding another pool to the region.

"We are in our 23rd year of teaching children to swim and when Mirvac approached us about looking at a swim centre at Orion, we were thrilled at the chance," Mr McMahon said. "Families love the aquatic experience provided by The Swim Factory and we hope to start construction in September and be open mid-2015."
