New parents to get info about workplace rights at hospital

NEW parents around the country will get information packs informing them of their workplace rights after having children as part of a new Fair Work Ombudsman campaign.

More than 200,000 information packs will be distributed to new parents while they are still in hospital after the birth of their children.

The packs will include information about parental leave entitlements, returning to work after leave and flexible work arrangements for new parents.

FWO executive director Lynda McAlary-Smith said the ombudsman wanted to ensure new parents had all the information they needed to negotiate with the employers.

"We also want to help employers by highlighting the benefits that flexible working arrangements can bring to businesses," she said.

"This includes better staff retention, reduced absenteeism and making their business attractive to potential employees.

"Employees should have these conversations with their employer with enough lead time to make suitable and beneficial arrangements for both parties."

The FWO has also provided a range of information and tools for new parents online at http://www.fairwork.gov.au/workingparents
