New owners boost shop with a smile

MOUNT Crosby Store and Post Office is the definition of a good old fashioned corner store.

Tracy and Russell Thompson have been married for 24 years and took over ownership of the store in February last year.

"Since we started business has doubled, we have tried to focus more on customer service," Mrs Thompson said.

"We've tried to turn it from an inconvenience store into a convenience store.

"We've lived in the area for 15 years and always loved this little shop, just the atmosphere, it's a real country store."

The Thompsons said the key for the survival of corner stores is to do things big businesses can't.

"It's very sad that corner stores are closing, I think the big thing is to try and diversify where possible," Mrs Thompson said.

"I'm not going to compete with big business but they're not going to have the local ladies making quilts, bags and our unique deli items, I try and steer away from the mass production companies and create a niche market."

Customer Avril Osborne said the convenience store owners always had time for their regulars.

"They always have smiles on their faces and make my daily trips to the PO enjoyable," she said.

"They make great coffee too; Australia needs more happy, friendly, business owners like this amazing couple."

Mrs Thompson said the couple enjoyed getting involved with the local community and has tried to offer a wide variety of services for the people of Mount Crosby.

"We're in a historical area here the shop is heritage listed, we wanted to stay true to the local area," she said.

"We've got espresso coffee, takeaway and dine in food, a post office, it's a one-stop shop really.

"The business has grown and we've had really great support from the locals."

The shop owners said they know most customers by name and have built up a rapport with the Mount Crosby community.

"People here don't have a mailman, they enjoy coming to the post office to get their mail," Mrs Thompson said.

"We have regulars every morning, it's so varied you don't get a chance to be bored.

"You know everyone that comes in and it's a real positive experience for me, I enjoy it.

"The chips are great too, where else can you get a good serve of chips for only two dollars?"

The Mt Crosby Store and Post Office is located on 659 Mount Crosby Road.
