Brisbane Lions ditch 'Paddle Pop Lion' jumpers

THE Brisbane Lions hope getting back into the jumper that brought a hat-trick of premierships from 2001-03 will see the club return to those glory days.

Lions vice-captain Tom Rockliff (pictured) modelled the "new" uniform yesterday, saying while it represented the most successful era of the club's history, current players were keen to create their own legacy.

"As a playing group we really feel like we have an opportunity to forge our own history in it," Rockliff said.

"We want the jumper to represent the success of our current group, not just be a reminder of our past success.

"The club is in a really exciting place at the moment and I think it's the perfect time for the original guernsey to return."

The team has worn a variety of jumper designs in the combined 128-year history of Fitzroy, the Bears and the merged Brisbane Lions.

Apart from the three-peat design, the most famous was the canvas lace-up style that brought premierships in 1898, 1899, 1904 and 1905.

A survey of more than 3000 fans last season saw 71.4% of them requesting a return to the design worn during the halcyon days under coach Leigh Matthews, and ditching the 'Paddle Pop Lion'.

Former Brisbane Lions captain and coach Michael Voss said he had a goal of eventually being a senior coach again after starting his new role as an assistant at Port Adelaide.

"I have very long-term aspirations of being a coach again, but that's not my agenda here," Voss said.
