New events at Ipswich Winter Carnival launch season

HAVING seen the 31 previous Ipswich winter carnivals, club president Bailey Pashley knows the fine tradition this weekend's competition has created.

Even at the Sunshine Coast before moving to Ipswich, Pashley watched as athletes used the carnival to launch a new season.

With the latest competition at Bill Paterson Oval tomorrow, the club president is excited two new events have been added to the popular all-day program.

Ipswich and district masters competitors can contest a men's event over 1500m at 9.30am before a women's event over 400m at 2pm.

"It's just something different," Pashley said, preparing for his second season as club president.

"It's an endeavour to reach out to other running organisations in town."

With a long association with Ipswich through athletics and teaching, Pashley still values the annual carnival.

"Our club athletes like this as a nice hit-out," he said.

"The program was set out many years ago as a run, not only for our athletes but athletes in south east Queensland.

"It's a bit early for the older ones but a good meet for school athletes."

Regional titles start next week, leading into another busy athletics season.

Pashley said the carnivals at Ipswich and Sunshine Coast universities are the only ones to have survived in a season-starting format.

The Gift prizemoney races tomorrow are the main events, with heats, semis and finals planned throughout the day.

Ipswich club runners in major races include Elizabeth Melrose, Olivia Harvey, Larissa Chambers and Aaliyah Chambers (Ladies 100m Gift); and Scott Tuohy, John Purdon, Nicholas Hough and Patrick McCarthy (120m Lightning Gift).
