New centre pitch could ease demand for places

A NEW childcare centre has been proposed for Sadliers Crossing and it couldn't come sooner with community-run Cribb St centre at capacity.

On Thursday a private company lodged an application with Ipswich City Council to build a new centre, with six separate playrooms, on the corner of Herbert and Burnett Sts.

It's not far from the celebrated and popular Cribb Street centre, which this year was named as one of the city's highest performing childcare facilities; but even manager Bernadette Leedham agrees the area needs more places for children.

Cribb Street has a capacity of 43 children a day and this year is the first time there's been a waiting list for the kindergarten age group.

"We are full every single day," Ms Leedham said.

"There is a waiting list, particularly for babies. The suburb does need another facility."

If approved, the proposed development will have a two-building centre take shape with the existing house moved to the back of the property, freeing up the front of the property for construction.

The centre has been proposed by J-Corp Holdings Pty Ltd.

The council is yet to make a decision on the application.
