New captain motivated to play well in lead-up to carnival

IPSWICH captain Clare Gillett has added incentives to lead her side to a solid performance in Boonah today.

The newly-appointed Senior 1 team leader is returning to a familiar Coronation Park ground where she's played many games.

"It will be my first time back there since I left Fassie,'' Gillett said, having switched to the Ipswich competition in 2011.

"There's a great relationship between Ipswich and Fassifern.

"We love beating each other but when we come off we're all mates, which is great.''

With the Queensland championships being held at the same venue in January, Gillett is also keen to use today's representative season opener as a valuable warm-up.

"From our point of view, it will be good to perform well this weekend to take that into the state titles,'' she said.

"It will be interesting to get back to the old ground and old pitch again.''

As a new captain, Gillett is eager to blend the team's experienced core with some exciting young players coming up the ranks.

The TC United captain is continuing her partnership with club teammate Kate Johnstone, who is vice captain today.

"We've worked together before, which is always a benefit,'' Gillett (pictured) said.

"Hopefully we can do all right at rep level as well.''

Other senior players include former captains Deanne Lawrie and Rachel Savage, as well as Jodie Spall and Kerryn Graham.

Younger talents include Yasmin Leeder, Kirsten Ihle and Danielle Silvester.

The Senior 1 team is one of five representative sides from the city playing in annual inter-city games.

Ipswich's Senior 2, Veterans, Under 18, and 13 and under combinations will also face Boonah on their home ground today.
