New brigade looks to impress Aussie cricket selectors

West Australian opening batsman Cameron Bancroft is one of a handful of emerging players in the frame to make their Test or ODI debuts this summer following the retirements of Ryan Harris, Michael Clarke, Chris Rogers, Brad Haddin and Shane Watson.

Despite the loss of those experienced players, the future of the Baggy Green cap looks in good hands.

APN has identified five young players - Bancroft, Nic Maddinson, Andrew Fekete, Sean Abbott and Adam Zampa - who have put their names firmly in front of the selectors.

  Cameron Bancroft - Age: 22; State: WA; Opener
A patient opening batsman with a sound technique, Bancroft lived up to expectations with a stunning 211 against New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield game in March. Since then he has scored 150 for Australia A against India A, and made 176 from 155 balls against South Australia in the Matador Cup.
Was set to make his Test debut after being named in the 15-man squad for the tour to Bangladesh.

  Nic Maddinson - Age: 23; State: NSW; Opener
At just 23 he already has 2929 runs and six centuries to his name from 46 first-class games.
Has made a strong case already this summer, scoring 108 against the Cricket Australia XI and 118 not out against Tasmania in the Matador Cup.

  Andrew Fekete - Age: 30; State: Tasmania, Paceman
Not exactly a youngster, but Fekete has come from nowhere in the past two years to put his hand up as a serious Test contender.
And when you are the leading Sheffield Shield pace bowler from last summer with 37 wickets at 24.10, you certainly deserve to be a part of the conversation.

  Sean Abbott - Age: 23; State: NSW; Bowling all-rounder
Showed great potential in the 2013-14 season when he topped the domestic one-day wicket tally with 16 at 20.93. He also took 27 Sheffield Shield wickets the same summer, winning the Steve Waugh Medal as New South Wales's player of the season.
Represented Australia A in India in August. Just needs more consistency in his batting.

  Adam Zampa - Age: 23; State: SA; Leg spinner
Nathan Lyon's spot as the Test team's spinner is assured for now, with New South Wales' Steve O'Keefe the next in line.
But quality leg-spinners are hard to find, and Zampa is doing his chances no harm.
Took 4-49 for Australia A against India A on August 7, and also snared 4-48 for the Redbacks against the Cricket Australia XI in the Matador Cup yesterday.
