New bitumen surface in the works for Gympie streets

THE smell of hot asphalt, the beep of reversing machines and flashing lights signalled the start of the resurfacing of Mary St Tuesday night.

Gympie Regional Council Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Larry Friske said motorists, traders and pedestrians would enjoy the benefits of new bitumen from Monkland St to Mellor St.

The council awarded the contract to Downer EDI, which has an asphalt plant at Gympie Industrial Estate.

Work is expected to finish June 28, if weather allows.

Cr Friske said the works were scheduled during the night.

The work would occur between 7pm and 6am to minimise disruption to businesses in the CBD.

He said staff from the council's design services division had consulted with businesses in Mary St before the work commenced.

Cr Friske said this was done to identify any issues or opportunities associated with the works.

A variable message sign has been put in place during the works, at Monkland/Mary St intersection to alert motorists and pedestrians to the works.

"As a result of the resurfacing works, pedestrians, motorists and very much improved road surface - both physically and visually - for the length of Mary St for many years to come," Cr Friske said.

For further information about the project, please phone the council's design services division on 5481 0622 or email design@gympie.qld.gov.au.
