'There's no comparison with Julia'

FEDERAL MP Shayne Neumann says there are no parallels between the weekend's stunning state election and the looming federal poll.

Mr Neumann holds Blair by 4.2% and would be wiped out if the state result was replicated at next year's federal election.

He said the state election was fought on state issues, but there were lessons for his federal colleagues from Saturday's landslide.

He was at East Ipswich State School yesterday with parliamentary secretary for school education Jacinta Collins, to talk with teachers and parents about the Gonski Review.

"It was a very, very bad result for the Labor Party, both statewide and locally," Mr Neumann said.

"It was a historic defeat for us and we've got a lot to learn and we'll discuss that internally.

"I've already had some discussion with the Prime Minister and the deputy prime minister about those issues; issues such as time for a change - the State Government had been in for a long time.

"There's issues also of trust. I would think the most emblematic problem was the asset sales and then there was the issue of competency and service delivery."

However, he denied any similarity between Anna Bligh and Julia Gillard making promises before the election and going back on them.

"I don't accept the analogy. There was no mention of asset sales from Anna Bligh before the 2009 election," he said.

"We went to the 2007 election and the 2011 election with a commitment to take action on climate change.

"What we've done is put forward a carbon pricing mechanism for a short time until an emissions trading scheme comes in."

Mr Neumann said the next federal election would be fought on federal issues.

"It's up to the voters to decide. I've never, ever taken the voters for granted," he said.

"Every single election you have to respect it's not about you, it's about the voters. It's about what they want and what they need and what they deserve."
