Nervous silence in Broncos’ finals bid

DEBATE has been raging in the lead up to the NRL season about whether the Broncos can put last year's horror campaign behind them and make the finals in 2014.

The club was highly active on the recruitment front during its off-season after its worst-ever finish of 12th last year, bringing in stars Ben Barba, Daniel Vidot and Martin Kennedy.

But there has been silence among the coaching staff.

And that silence is golden, according to Brisbane legend Wally Lewis.

"What I'm quite pleased to hear is how quiet (Broncos coach) Anthony Griffin has been. Usually when a coach says nothing, the players start to feel nervous," Lewis told APN.

"They're not getting the pat on the back or the assurance that they hold that position, so they've got to prove to the coach that they can perform."

One of those players with a lot to prove this year was going to be talented 23-year-old Jordan Kahu.

But Kahu went down with a suspected ACL injury in the trial match against the Cowboys on Saturday night - his third long-term knee injury in four years.

"Fingers crossed for him (Kahu), because he's obviously got the talent," former five-eighth Lewis said.

"His early performances indicated that he was going to be a real chance.

"He has all the talent, it was just the opportunities that had to present themselves."

Griffin was not giving up on seeing Kahu return to the playing field this year, despite his recent dose of misfortune.

Zach Strasser, Ben Hunt and Kodi Nikorima are all in the running for halves spots also, while Barba could find himself at pivot at some stages this season.

"Usually when you've got competition for spots going on, that guarantees performance will come," Lewis said.

"The more people there are fighting for positions, the better."

Fellow Broncos legend Gorden Tallis said the acquisition of Alex Corvo as strength and conditioning coach, from the Storm, will greatly benefit Brisbane this year.

"He was at the Melbourne Storm for 10 years," Tallis said.

"Have a look at their culture - do they give in? No. So I couldn't imagine Brisbane giving in.

"I spoke to someone from the inside of the (Broncos pre-season training) camp and the boys were really struggling, which was good to hear."
