Government to dissolve Climate Commission

THE nation's key independent climate advisory, the Climate Commission, will no longer exist as of Friday.

As part of the Coalition's plans to scrap the carbon tax, Environment Minister Greg Hunt confirmed on Thursday the commission would be dissolved.

The axing of the body - which provided reports on the effects of climate change on everything from agriculture to health - also came with the sacking of Chief Commissioner Tim Flannery.

Professor Flannery led the commission from its inception in 2011 until Mr Hunt rang him on Thursday to advise him of the decision.

However, a statement from Mr Hunt's office said the same functions to provide independent advice and analysis on climate change would continue in the Department of Environment.

That statement said the decision to abolish the commission would save the government $1.6 million each year, and an extra $580,000 this fiscal year.
