SHE'S a strong leader, full of wisdom and strength and families across the US are naming their baby girls after her.

But she isn't a political figure or a revolutionary luminary.

This year 150 baby girls in the US have been named Khaleesi after a fictional Game of Thrones character.

"Khaleesi" means Queen in a fictional language used by the character, Daenerys Stormborn, in the popular HBO series.

Toowoomba mum Maria Hay said she knew of parents who looked to popular culture for baby name inspiration.

She is yet to meet a "Khaleesi" herself, and preferred a more traditional approach when deciding the name for her first born, Francis.

"We wanted an old-fashioned, strong, meaningful name," Mrs Hay said. "His name is Francis Xavier Hay after St Francis of Assisi and St Francis Xavier.

"We wanted a name that was not popular at all. We wanted our child to have a unique name but not with unique spelling.

"Eventually his teachers, peers and many other strangers will need to spell it, so we did not want him to have to spell out his name all the time.

"We did not really want to name our kids after pop culture or names of people we knew, as they often get linked to them.
