Naked man allegedly approaches girl while fondling himself

A TEENAGE girl has been approached by a naked man in a car in a shocking incident at a Townsville shopping centre.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Daniel Stehr, Officer in Charge of the Child Protection Investigation Unit, said a 17-year-old girl was approached by a man in a dark coloured sedan.

He said the teenager allegedly saw the man masturbating.

"(The man) pulled up alongside her. When she looked into the car she observed the driver of the vehicle to be entirely naked and fondling himself," Det Stehr said.

"He tried to engage her … maybe in an attempt to befriend her."

Sen-Sgt Stehr said the alleged incident happened on September 11 in the Willows Shopping Centre car park.

He said a 27-year-old Douglas man was last night charged with a single offence of indecent acts in a public place.

He is due to appear in court on October 5.

Sen-Sgt Stehr said police were able to identify the man after the teenager filmed him on her mobile phone.

"We were able to identify him through both registration of the vehicle and facial recognition," he said.

"She's done the right thing and brought it to our attention. It should be brought to police's attention immediately.

"Things like vehicle registration numbers, vehicle descriptions, anything distinctive to that vehicle can be a very important detail that can help us track that person down quicker."

This incident comes after a number of students were approached outside Townsville schools.

On August 28, a man reportedly attempted to pull a female Kirwan State High School student into a car.

While on September 11 a Willows State School student was forced to run away from a stranger who tried to lure them into a car when walking home.

This was followed by another alleged incident on Monday when a man attempted to get a Kirwan State High School female student into his car.

Despite the string of incidents, Sen-Sgt Stehr said he "wouldn't suggest there has been an increase" in approaches.

Sen-Sgt Stehr urged the public to report any suspicious behaviour, especially if it involved children.
