Ezra, not just a musician
EZRA James describes himself as both a lover and a fighter.
The Ipswich singer, who is forging ahead with his music career, is also a passionate mixed martial arts or MMA competitor.
"People find it really odd that I have such a smooth voice and then do something like MMA," he said.
"The music industry is stressful sometimes so training is like my form of relaxation and it keeps me grounded.
"The average week for me involves recording in the mornings, training at All Dae Jungle Squad in Redbank in the afternoon and night and I usually gig all weekend."
Although his schedule seems demanding, James said he was not the kind of person who liked to sit still.
"I just get excited about everything," he said.
"I hate staying at home and love being so busy."
James had an unusual start to the music industry, writing his first song to try and win a date with a girl he had a crush on.
"I wanted to ask her out in a cool way so I thought I'd try to write the world's best love song," he laughed.
"I didn't get the girl but that led to my career in music."
After four years of writing and performing, James has seen recent nation-wide success with his latest single, Runaway.
When the independent Ipswich musician first heard his song being played on a major radio station, he almost couldn't believe his ears.
"It was surreal," James said.
"It's only been out for four weeks and has already reached number one on the Shazam Top 20.
"When it was first being played people were calling into the radio station saying how much they loved it and it all started from there."
James said he made the popular track last year when trying to move his music in a new direction.
"That song really represents my new sound," he said.
"It's the single from my upcoming EP, Runaway, so I'm trying to work on a really strong track to follow it up.
"I'm hoping to release the album in mid-December."
