Mums fire up as Woolworths ignores formula rort

MOTHERS are furious with supermarket chain Woolworths after a photo emerged of customers buying entire trolley loads of the products, potentially to on-sell at a profit.

Australian mums are being forced to hunt for A2 Platinum baby formula, as the supply struggles to meet the product's demand in China.

A tin of the formula is currently for sale on eBay for $190, charging $70 for standard postage.

It is among the most expensive, with other sellers offering it for closer to $100.

Mother-of-two Jessica Hay took a photo of a pallet of the formula being wiped out in one go.

A group of four adults had bought about 50 tins, filling two trolleys while a third woman stood guard over the remaining boxes on the pallet. Officially Woolworths has a four-tin limit but even as other customers demanded action, the checkout staff did not stop the purchase.

Ms Hay described the formula as "white gold" when talking to Fairfax Media.

"My blood was boiling for the mothers having problems finding A2 for their babies. I was feeling sensitive because I've got a newborn," she said.

"If they were with babies, it would be understandable, they need to feed their kids too. But it felt like a smooth operation, like they did this all the time."

Woolworths is yet to comment on the issue.
