Man threatened to punch foetus out of partner's stomach

A TORQUAY man who told his pregnant partner he wanted to "punch the child out of her stomach and kill it" has received a suspended prison sentence in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

The 33-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced court charged with contravention of a domestic violence order and wilful damage after he abused his partner on August 5.

His partner, who was eight months pregnant at the time, had just arrived home from Brisbane after attending hospital for a check up.

She got out of a taxi and was confronted by her partner, who was intoxicated.

"He began to yell and abuse her," police prosecutor Senior Constable Jeanette Grigoris said.

As his partner started to make them coffee, the man threw a coffee cup on the ground and then started smashing mugs, crockery and glasses in the kitchen area.

He picked up the kettle full of boiling water and threw it at his partner, just missing her.

It was then he told his partner he would "punch the child out of her" and threatened to kill them both, the court heard.

The man smashed the phone, giving the woman no way of calling police, and destroyed a shrine she had created in honour of her late mother.

When police arrived, they found the victim crying with the defendant standing over her.

The man pleaded guilty to both charges and submitted a statement from himself and his partner to the court.

He said he did not remember the incident.

The man was sentenced to four months in prison, wholly suspended for 18 months.
