Reprimanded for petition fraud

PRIVATE citizens, who signed a petition more than once and bragged about it on a social media site, have been reprimanded.

In State Parliament on Tuesday morning, Speaker Fiona Simpson enlightened her fellow MPs to the fraudulent behaviour.

The two unnamed people entered their names on a single e-petition four and 17 times respectively.

"The persons bearing these names then bragged about their actions on a social media site," Ms Simpson said.

The parliamentary clerk has since deleted the multiple entries and notified the offenders their behaviour could constitute contempt.

"I am satisfied at this time with the action taken.

"However, should these persons attempt to undertake such an action again, I will refer the matter to the Ethics Committee as a breach of privilege and contempt," Ms Simpson said.
