MP says he'll do all he can to help sacked college staff

FAIRFAX MP Ted O'Brien says he will be doing all he can to support Sunshine Coast workers affected by the collapse of the administrative arm of SmartCity Vocational College.

SC Admin Pty Ltd went into voluntary liquidation on Friday night, leaving more than 300 workers across the country jobless days before Christmas.

Mr O'Brien said he'd made contact with the Department of Education as well as the Australian Council for Private Education and Training after hearing of the company's collapse and had been assured the situation was being closely monitored.

He said his first concern was at a personal level, unsure of exactly how many Sunshine Coasters were affected only a week out from Christmas.

"That's just gut-wrenching for any employee to be dealing with," Mr O'Brien said.

He said VET FEE-HELP students training with SmartCity that may be affected by the SC Admin collapse would have their tuition guaranteed by ACPET's tuition assurance scheme, meaning they could transfer into another training organisation or opt out and be reimbursed for any modules yet to be completed.

It's unclear exactly what impact SC Admin's liquidation will have on students, with a SmartCity Facebook post last week saying campuses would reopen on January 23.

Mr O'Brien said he was looking into ways the Federal Government could assist local workers in the New Year who will be looking for new employment.

"It'd just be devastating," Mr O'Brien said.

He advised any affected VET FEE-HELP students to contact the Department of Education and Training on 1800 020 108 or ACPET on 1800 657 644.

Affected staff can contact the Department of Employment via the Fair Entitlements Guarantee hotline on 1300 135 040.
