End to speed-zone confusion

CONFUSION over the Ipswich Mwy's ever-changing speed zones will end today with a uniform limit of 90kmh introduced until the project's completion.

Motorists can also be assured the motorway speed limit will once again return to 100kmh after the mid-year completion of the Dinmore to Goodna section.

"The final design is to be 100kmh once all the electronic signage is fully commissioned by June/July," said a spokesman from the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The department representative confirmed the interim speed limit is now 90kmh across all motorway sections.

"All limits will now match the existing speeds between Oxley and Gailes after work was undertaken on the Dinmore to Goodna west-bound lanes last night."

Ipswich drivers' widespread concern about the alternating limits was illustrated yesterday by an array of comments posted online by QT readers.

One reader stated "the Centenary Hwy has a speed limit of 100 so why is the Ipswich Mwy 90km?", whilst another described the speed limit confusion as a "massive speed trap".

Ipswich Acting Inspector Greg Shaw urged drivers to be patient until the motorway is complete.

"Road safety is a very important focus for us and hopefully road users will be doing their best to stay within the limit," Acting Inspector Shaw said.

He said the motorway would not be targeted any more than usual.

With the Dinmore to Goodna motorway section running months ahead of schedule, drivers need only wait until mid-year before the speed limit is once again reinstated to 100kmh.
