Motorsport racing not just for the blokes

THE ladies themed Test 'n' Tune at Willowbank Raceway was a great idea and great to watch last Saturday.

It was good to see the ladies getting out on track and giving it a go, and there were some nice rides as well.

It just goes to show that motor sport is not all for the boys and if you love cars then it doesn't matter what gender you are, you should just give it a go.

A few of the ladies I spoke to loved it and were likely entrants for the powderpuff series which kicks off January 30, so all I can say is that I think it is great for the sport to have ladies well represented on the track.

Last week there were a few new kids out at both the Ipswich Switches Junior Speedway Club and the Ipswich Kart Club.

It seems the New Year has brought new enthusiasm and ambitions to many, and for some, the opportunity to just have some fun in a family environment is a big drawcard.

Tonight sees Queensland Raceway kick off its 2016 campaign and I'm hanging out for tonight's Friday Night Drifts.

The drifters always come out in good numbers and put on a good show.

With tonight being the first of these events for the year there should be plenty of new cars around with many builds finally being finished off over the break.

Tomorrow night I will be heading over to the drag strip for another Willowbank Raceway Test 'n' Tune - already this year they have been well-supported, so I expect another good roll-up.

It's a great time of the year to get along as many guys and gals are trying new things to get that edge for the 2016 season.

Speaking of test 'n' tunes, if you love all things vans, make sure you get along for Wednesday night's van-themed test 'n' tune at the drag strip.

Whether you have a tradie van, kombi van, mum's van or any type of van, come along and race it for free on January 13 as long as you have a printed and completed flyer from the track's Facebook page.

Before we get to Wednesday, there is still more to check out at the precinct this weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, the V8 Race Experience will be hitting Queensland, so the circuit will no doubt be filled with masses of people who scored a V8 drive for Christmas.

I have been lucky enough to have been gifted a V8 drive before and it is truly an awesome experience.

The instructors are great and by the time I had finished my laps I thought I was ready to become a professional V8 Supercar driver.

I was lucky enough to have the V8 Drive hot laps combo too, so I jumped in with the pro driver for the hot laps and found I have a lot of work to do to become a pro.

It is well worth the money to do both, as it gives you a real appreciation for how good the pro drivers are after trying it out myself.

Good luck to all the lucky hot lappers. I will be out there on Sunday to have a chat with a few of them.
