UPDATE: Rider dies after motorcycle crash

A 44-year old Brisbane man has died after a motorcycle crash on the Dawson Highway at Callemondah.

His motorbike was found upright at the bottom of a tree inside the roundabout of the highway and Callemondah Drive, meters away from the rider.

A QPS spokesman said police believed the rider was trying to overtake a vehicle, but hit a guard rail and lost control.

Police are still investigating the events leading up to the crash.

UPDATE 2.11PM: The Dawson Highway eastbound is now re-opened to traffic.

Motorbike riders are three times more likely to die on Queensland roads than drivers, a recent Courier-Mail analysis of crash data shows.

Last year 44 motorbike riders were killed on the state's roads, compared to 121 drivers.

While this was less than in 2017, one alarming trend has not budged - the huge over-representation of motorcyclists in road fatalities.

Motorcycles make up less than 5 per cent of registered vehicles, yet riders account for nearly 20 per cent of the 247 road deaths in Queensland last year.

10.20AM: POLICE have advised the inbound lanes of the Dawson Hwy will remain closed due to a traffic crash earlier this morning.

Crews are still investigating.

9.20AM: THE DAWSON Hwy is expected to be closed for 3-4 hours.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the incident.

EARLIER: QUEENSLAND Police have advised drivers that the Dawson Hwy, Callemondah is currently closed to traffic after a motorcycle accident.

The incident happened at about 7.00am.

The Queensland Ambulance service said the rider was not transported to hospital.

It's not known how long the highway will be closed.

This is a breaking news event, more to come.
