Motorbike rider given prison sentence thanks to GoPro footage

GOPRO footage has betrayed a motorbike rider who was caught riding 90kmh over the speed limit on a Coast road.

On February 15, Aaron James Turner, 33, was clocked by police doing well over the limit in the 50kmh zone of Goonawarra Dr, Mooloolaba.

Police attempted to intercept Turner, but he sped away and eventually lost control and crashed at an intersection leaving him with a broken back and fractured tibia.

Turner was taken to hospital, but refused to undergo a blood test.

Footage from a GoPro Turner was wearing on his jacket that day showed him travelling at speeds of 159kmh, but he refused to be interviewed by police when questioned two months later.

Checks on Turner's motorbike showed it was unregistered and was fitted with home-made numberplates.

Turner, who was supported in court by his mother and sister, pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday to nine charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and disobeying the speed limit.

His licence had also been disqualified one week prior to the offences for drug driving and was on probation at the time.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist told Turner, "count your lucky stars, you're even here to be sentenced" considering his driving history and referred to him as a "danger to the public".

For speeding, driving unlicensed and unregistered, failing to comply and making false numberplates Turner was fined $1500.

He was sentenced to three periods of imprisonment ranging from four to six months for the other offences to be suspended immediately for 18 months and disqualified from driving for a total of 3.5 years.
