Molly still in critical condition

MELBOURNE doctors will keep music guru Molly Meldrum in a coma into next week as they try to ease the swelling on his brain.

Meldrum, 65, remains in a critical yet stable condition in the Alfred hospital after fracturing his skull when he fell down stairs in the backyard of his Richmond home on Thursday night, as he was putting up Christmas decorations.

The former Countdown host underwent surgery late on Thursday.

Brian Meldrum said his brother was making "little steps forward" but his life remained in the balance.

Mr Meldrum said his brother was likely to remain sedated until early next week.
