Mixed results as rainy weather hits weekend

THE Ipswich Rangers suffered a disappointing setback in their preparations for a cross-town showdown with Springfield.

Both Barber Cup and Pegg Cup grades were kept to nil by the home side Wynnum who were celebrating their Old Boys day.

Fired up in front of their fans and former players, the Bugs defeated Ipswich 64-0 in Barber Cup and 47-0 in Reserve grade.

Ipswich Rangers coach Mark Hamling said the club was determined to bounce back this weekend when they play host to Springfield for their own Old Boys celebrations.

“We just keep running out of puff in the end,” he said.

“To their credit Wynnum are a very good side and they should give Springfield a scare if they come up against each other in the finals.

“On Saturday we’ll have both grades in action as well as our under 9’s for our Old Boys day. It’s a huge day for the club and for Springfield as well.”

The Springfield faithful braved the wet conditions to watch both grades take on Redlands for the honour of winning the Presidents Cup and Subritzsky Cup.

The Hawks continued their undefeated run in the top grade with a 26-17 win over Redlands and clinched both trophies with a 26-0 win in the Pegg Cup.

Springfield Pegg Cup coach Tony Kiri described the conditions as some of the worst he’s seen.

“It was a credit to the people who turned up in such bad weather to support the teams,” he said. “We had the juniors out there in the morning as well and it was good to see such support.

“It was a big day for all the volunteers and after 11 hours out there I feel like I was out there playing too.”

A 38-19 win over Everton Park has Goodna in line to reach the finals in both Barber and Pegg Cup competitions.

The Gladiators are firmly placed in sixth position in both grades with only three rounds remaining.
