Miriam Vale water treatment plant one step closer

THE Miriam Vale Water Treatment Plant upgrade is one step closer to being underway after the Queensland Government awarded a tender for the project.

State Development Minister Anthony Lynham made the announcement in Queensland Parliament on Thursday.

The government has committed $1.5 million in funding to the $3.4 million project that is expected to be complete in November this year.

Miriam Vale water is sourced from ground and surface supplies and the current water treatment plant is considered to be substandard.

This project will construct a new water treatment plant that will incorporate processes to capture and remove toxins associated with blue-green algae and esthetic issues.

The funding comes from round one of the $70 million Building Our Regions program.

Applications for the second funding round will open on April 4.

"We want councils to get the ball rolling on applications for eligible infrastructure projects that will benefit their communities through real jobs and long-term economic opportunities," Dr Lynham said.

"So far, 11 agreements have been signed by councils and 31 agreements are in development.

"Tenders have already been awarded for the Bundaberg Region Multi-use Community and Sports Centre and the Miriam Vale Water Treatment Plant." - APN NEWSDESK
