Minor premiership lure for contenders

THIS weekend's Ipswich hockey men's A-grade fixtures hit off today at the irregular time of 2.30pm.

It's a match between competition heavyweights Easts and Norths.

The game is a grand final rematch and important for both teams in their quest to secure the minor premiership.

A host of players are unavailable from both sides due to work, Brisbane competition commitments, Queensland Country duties and injuries.

Talk this week has centred on a former Easts Tiger lacing up the boots to help his club out while they are so low on numbers.

Time will tell if the ex-player takes his place in the side.

The tip is for a 3-3 scoreline at the full-time hooter.

Tomorrow, the resurgent Wests take on the gritty Hancocks side.

This game is hard to predict.

Wests have found a surprising turn of form with new goal-scoring power up front. However, the young Hancocks side was without their regular goalkeeper and still only lost 6-5 to Easts.

Wests are tipped to sneak home 5-4 in another goal feast.

The main women's A-grade action this weekend focuses on the Combined Competition final between Hancocks and Toowoomba Newtown.

That match is tomorrow afternoon (4pm).

Today's Ipswich competition A-grade matches are between Thistles and Norths (4pm) and Hancocks and Bellbowrie (5.30pm).

The last A-grade women's match of the round is between Swifts and Wests at 5.30pm tomorrow.

The tip is for the Hancocks women to meet Newtown's challenge and win 3-2.

Other winners should be Norths (2-1 over Thistles), Hancocks (3-1 over Bellbowrie) and Swifts (4-1 over Wests).

Meanwhile, West Hockey Club is holding a fundraising race day on August 15. See Phantom's column on Page 66 for details.
