Minimum wage rises 45c an hour

AUSTRALIA'S lowest paid workers have been awarded a pay increase of $17.10 per week.

Fair Work Australia announced on Friday the new minimum wage would sit at $606.40 per week.

The increase equates to a rise of 45 cents per hour for the 1.4 million Australians currently on the minimum wage.

FWA president Iain Ross also announced a 2.9% rise to award wages.

Mr Ross described the increases as moderate.

Business groups had called for an increase of no more than $9 per week to the minimum wage, while the Australian Council of Trade Unions wanted a hike of $26.
