Miner drives injured friend, despite licence suspension

A MINER told police a "rather interesting story" when he was caught driving without a licence.

Tyson Ashley Stewart, 26, was pulled over by Tieri police for a random breath test at 5.35pm on November 5.

Stewart, a father of three and miner at Oaky Creek Mine, said he was driving from the gym to a mine camp at Tieri after his friend, who was the passenger in the vehicle, hurt his foot but didn't need any medical attention.

Emerald Magistrates Court heard Stewart was aware he was suspended from driving at the time of the offence.

He told Magistrate Robert Walker he knew what he did was wrong.

Mr Walker acknowleged the other person was incapable of driving from a minor injury, and said it was a rather interesting story to tell the police.

Stewart pleaded guilty to driving without a drivers licence due to a high speed suspension after driving at more than 40km/hr over the speed limit.

He was fined $600 and disqualified from driving for six months.

The conviction was recorded.

Mr Walker said Stewart should use the time to reflect on his failure to his young family from his reckless behaviour.
