MILDRED Ellwood brightened up our world on Ipswich Cup Day.

The stunning outfit that saw her win the QT Fashions on the Field was created with the express purpose to “give some inspiration” to the people of Ipswich.

Ms Ellwood, who lives in Lota, won flights for two to Melbourne and a $1000 Redbank Plaza shopping voucher, after the azure blue and green colours of her outfit were a winning combination for the judges.

“It is winter and most of the time that means darker colours and dressing in black – but with the floods that everyone has gone through in Ipswich I wanted to wear brighter colours and give the people some inspiration,” Ms Ellwood said.

“I am an occupational health and safety officer – and a nurse as well – and I wear overalls.

“So I am an everyday worker, but I don’t have to wait for a wedding to dress up.

“My inspiration is to look glamorous and look like a lady. It is very important for me to dress up and embrace the culture.

“The blur is from Lisa Ho and the dress is from Paul Hunt – a designer from Brisbane. The blue shoes are from Wayne Cooper and the fascinator is from the Hat Box in Brisbane Arcade.”

Ms Elwood certainly achieved her goal to look glamorous.

As the QT interviewed her, passers by approached to say she looked “stunning” and “classy”.

Ms Ellwood immigrated to Australia from Zambia 13 years ago. She comes from a family of 14 and has three children of her own.

“I am first generation from Zambia – but home is where you make it and Australia is the land of settlers,” she said.

The men’s section was won by Ipswich’s Michael Frank. He said the inspiration for his outfit was a skull and crossbones tie that was a gift from his mother.

“The tie was the start of the outfit and I built from there,” he said. “Mum knows that I like that sort of thing and it is up to date with fashion. I just wanted to look as smart and sharp as I could.

“Everything is brand new and first time worn. The suit is from Chaps in Ipswich and the alterations were perfect.

“I wasn’t going to enter but my friends and family encouraged me.”
