Met West girls new Qld hockey champs

AN unbeaten performance by the Met West girls capped an impressive display by both regional teams at the Queensland School Sport 10-12 years state hockey championships.

The Met West girls won the important junior tournament after beating Sunshine Coast 1-0 in their final game at the Ipswich Hockey Complex.

Three Met West girls were selected in the Queensland School Sport 10-12 years girls' team. They were Mackenzie Hermann, Georgina West and Stella Harris.

The Met West boys came third after a 3-1 loss to Capricornia in their final match.

Three Met West boys were selected in the Queensland School Sport team. They were Ben Ward, Zac McCoombes and Riley Profke.

The Queensland boys and girls teams will compete at the 10-12 years Interstate Exchange in Perth in August.

Zac Profke was named as reserve student official for the nationals.

Carnival co-convenors Murray Rogers and John Lowik thanked the Ipswich Hockey Association, Met West officials and dedicated band of volunteers for their efforts in running a smooth tournament in the city.

"Players, officials and spectators made many positive comments throughout the tournament,'' Rogers said.

Rogers said the 10-12 years state tournament was the first taste of representative hockey for young players.

"We're trying to give people a positive experience in their very first representative hockey carnival and hopefully that will go through until they play over 60 vets,'' Rogers said.

Look out for a full Met West hockey review and photos in The Queensland Times tomorrow and on Wednesday.
