Message is clear on Day for Daniel
THE safety of our children is something the Gympie region takes very seriously.
And so do the children.
Students from various schools around the region had something special in common today - red t-shirts for Day for Daniel.
One Mile State School joined in the 10th annual event - the first to be held in honour of Daniel Morcombe since his killer, Brett Peter Cowan, was convicted and jailed.
A school spokeswoman said Day for Daniel was one of the most important on the school's calendar, and that the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum was vital education.
Each year the entire school gathers on the oval to tie red ribbons along the fence at the school facing Brisbane Rd in memory of Daniel.
The spokeswoman said students took the day, and the Daniel Morcombe Curriculum, seriously.
"The message I believe has been taken on board significantly by the students," she said.
The message of child safety comes days after a 10-year-old Gympie schoolgirl reported a man allegedly asking her to go to his home, offering lollies.
Gympie police Acting Senior Constable Debbie Wruck said it was important children felt safe reporting suspicious situations and knew what to do to stay safe, as promoted by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
