Teen juggles music, school, job and dad with mental illness

VIOLIN ensemble, stage band, school and a part-time job are just a few things that Maddy Dyer juggles in her day-to-day schedule.

But her top priority is taking care of her dad.

Her father Greg has lived with a mental illness for all of Maddy's life, which has had the 16-year-old take on the mature role of being his carer.

The Rockhampton State High School student has been recognised for her hard work in the National Carer Awards for Queensland, winning the Young Carer aged 25 years and under category.

Maddy has taken on the responsibility of helping her father around the house, and making sure his medical routine is followed.

With her mother, Anne-Marie, working full-time, Maddy helps out to ensure that her father can keep living at their Alton Downs home.

Maddy says her priorities are different to other teens because of her carer duties.

"Sometimes it's stressful and challenging for me when I've got school work to do," she said.

But the teen said she loved spending time with her father, especially when they headed out for walks together on their farm.

Maddy was taken aback when she won the award, with her mother entering her without her knowing.

She said it was great to receive the award and get recognition, but believed that all young carers needed to be recognised for the hard work they did.

Maddy is in the running for the national awards that will be announced next month.
