Memorial service for Hazel Hawke held in Sydney

DIGNITARIES across Australia's political divide gathered to remember Hazel Hawke at a state memorial service for the late wife of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke in Sydney on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Governor-General Quentin Bryce and former prime ministers John Howard, Kevin Rudd and Mr Hawke attended the service.

One of Ms Hawke's closest friends, Wendy McCarthy, spoke at the ceremony, saying she would be humbled by "the outpouring of love, affection and admiration" in the weeks since her death.

Hawke family friend and political associate Ralph Willis said Ms Hawke was tremendously supportive of Mr Hawke's political career.

He said she did have her own views on particular issues, and was not backward in arguing for them.

Former attorney-general Nicola Roxon also put a motion during Tuesday's Labor caucus meeting in parliament house, to remember not only as Mr Hawke's former wife, but a key contributor to the Labor Party and the nation.
