Medicinal cannabis excuse does not wash with magistrate

A MAN said he was caught with cannabis in his system while driving because he smoked it for medicinal purposes.

Derek Andrew Lewis pleaded guilty in Gatton Magistrates Court this week to drug driving on October 29, 2015, at Gatton.

Lewis told the court he suffered from insomnia and an aching back and used cannabis to treat these ailments.

Magistrate Graham Lee said regardless of this, it was illegal to take drugs.

Lewis was fined $350 and had his licence suspended for one month.
