Medical staffers step it up for challenge

STAFF at Ipswich Hospital are ditching the lifts in favour of the stairs as part of the 10,000 Steps Challenge.

Clinical nurse Emma Hutton said staff, divided into teams of four, had been working hard to get their steps up and beat the competition.

"People are really getting into it," she said.

"Everyone is checking each other's pedometers and there are always people going up and down the stair wells now."

The eight-week challenge, an initiative of West Moreton Hospital and Health Service, will run until mid-December.

Cassandra Cox from West Moreton Hospital and Health Service said the purpose of the challenge was to get staff up and moving.

"All of our health services from Boonah to Gatton are competing against each other," she said.

"The staff are really excited about it and it's making them think about how much they move during the day.

"We want to encourage staff to become more active and to set a good example for patients, their families and the community.

"There are a lot of opportunities to get steps around Ipswich, especially with all of the hospital's hills."

Ms Cox said so far there were 192 teams registered for the challenge.
