Mary Poppins show hits new heights

IPSWICH Musical Theatre Company's next big production is set to go down sweeter than a spoon full of sugar.

Director Brenda Ryan said tickets were on sale now for the community theatre group's large-scale performance of Mary Poppins, the Broadway musical - and the show would be one of the biggest and best yet.

"It literally takes community theatre to new heights as the high-flying nanny transports audiences on magical adventures," she said.

"This is the first year Mary Poppins has become available to local community theatre groups and audiences can be assured we will present it in a most delightful way.

Set in London in 1910, this iconic musical based on the stories of P.J. Travers and the Walt Disney film, tells of the dysfunctional upper middle-class Banks family.

"Mary Poppins flies in after the children of the family advertise for the perfect nanny and the magic happens from there," Ms Ryan said.

"We have local leads who are very talented and a lot of cast members from Ipswich.

"The performance will be of a professional standard."

The director said people could expect to hear all their favourite songs from the original musical.

"People may have watched the movie but live theatre is very special and it is totally different to see a performance unfolding in front of your eyes," she said.

"We're very excited to present the musical to Ipswich audiences and hope to do the same this time around."

Mary Poppins, the Broadway musical will be held at Ipswich Civic Centre from September 12-20.

Tickets cost $50 for adults, $45 for concession, $25 for primary school children and $135 for families. Bookings can be made by phoning 38106100.
