REMEMBERING each other's birthday has never been a problem for Silkstone sweethearts George and Thelma Martin.

Not only does the couple share the same age, both were born on the same day - August 2.

But their joint 75th birthdays weren't the only event they celebrated this month, they also marked their 50th wedding anniversary a week later.

Now grandparents, they were married at Blackstone's United Welsh Church in 1963, and had been looking forward to the milestone.

"The wedding feels like it was yesterday," George said.

"I've been a very lucky man. I've got the best girl in Ipswich and she's certainly looked after me."

They met through Thelma's younger brother Don, a mate of George's. "They used to play soccer and were good friends - even though they played for rival teams," Thelma recalled.

"We used to all hang out together...I thought George was really outgoing and friendly."

Thelma said it had been easy being married to George because another endearing quality of her husband's was that he never argued.

The retired couple celebrated with friends and family. They spend time doing volunteer work and staying active by playing bowls.
