Toowoomba's landscape to inspire artists at USQ

MORE than 100 creative souls are set to get their art on at University of Southern Queensland's Artsworx McGregor Winter.

Participants are coming from near and far next week with some travelling all the way from Western Australia.

The call of Toowoomba's mountain scenery and the impressive talent on display at the McGregor Winter workshop has wooed Jodine McBride from the other side of the country.

It was an easy call to answer. "It's my treat for the year: a week off in beautiful mountain scenery, learning from an artist I greatly admire," said Ms McBride, a visual arts educator for young visual artists in Perth.

Ms McBride and two colleagues are flying to Toowoomba to attend internationally acclaimed oil painter Colley Whisson's class at the McGregor Winter workshop.

"We've been looking at workshops all over the world, even in Tuscany, but this one in particular called to us," Ms McBride said.

"We could not pass up the opportunity to learn from Colley, particularly as whenever I'm having a bad day or just need a pick me up I scroll through pictures of his work on my phone and it brightens my day.

"He is such an expert artist and his impressionism is important and meaningful in capturing the Australian landscape, rural and suburban, through Australian eyes."

Ms McBride, a dedicated educator and artist, uses Whisson's work as examples for her students at Applecross Junior High, in which she runs a department for gifted and talented visual arts students.

"My students love to study Colley's work. "They know how hard oils are to work with and can appreciate how deft his skill is.

"I will definitely be bringing back some inspiration and tips for them from this exciting trip."
