Manly trial a chance for Jets to bond

THE Ipswich Jets travel to Sydney this weekend to play the Manly Sea Eagles in their final pre-season hit-out before round one of the Intrust Super Cup competition against Norths.

Manly played the Sharks last weekend and drew 24-all. Ex-Jet Kurt Capewell scored for the Sharks, playing in the centres.

Another former Jets regular Matt Parcell has a slight hamstring strain from the Auckland Nines and will not play against the Jets this weekend.

The trip away will have plenty of benefits for the Jets, including a chance for the new faces to bond as a team.

The Jets leave tomorrow morning for Sydney, returning home on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets are taking a squad of 22 players for their showdown with the Eagles.

Key players making impact

IT was terrific to see New Zealand international David Fa'alogo make his debut for the Jets in last Saturday's trial against the Burleigh Bears.

It was also the Jets' return for Nat Neale, who was slotting back in after not playing for the Jets since 2013. Neale scored a try and defending strongly.

Ray Baira was also strong.

It was then time for Michael Purcell and Chol Chol to show speed and score tries.

In the fastest back and forward races this week, Josh Seage and Chol Chol were crowned as pure speed athletes at training.

Second generation Jets

THE Ipswich Schoolboys under 12 side held trials on Saturday for the Sydney trip at Easter.

It was great to see two second generation Jets trialling. They were Zane Kaatz - the son of Brett Kaatz (Jet number 49), and Tommy Luhrman - the son of John Luhrman (Jet 250). Both were doing their best to be on the bus for Sydney in April.

Cooper's stat of the week

I RECEIVED some feedback from grade four student Cooper Smyly at school this week that he would like more statistics.

So to keep the young footy mad demographic happy, this week features Marmin Barba.

He ran the ball 328 times in 23 games in 2015, resulting in 31 tries and 29 line breaks. That's a try or line break every 5.4 runs.

Footy flashback

IT was 30 years ago this week the Jets played Beaudesert in their last trial game before stepping into the BRL and the Woolies pre-season comp.

The Jets won 48-4.
