Man seriously hurt after ‘motorised barstool’ crashes

POLICE were called to a serious crash at Puhoi, north of Auckland in New Zealand, but it didn't involve your typical road vehicle.

A 62-year-old man had left the nearby pub on his "motorised bar stool", a go-kart with a barstool on top for the driver's seat, the New Zealand Herald reported.

But it's no laughing matter, as the man wasn't wearing a helmet and fell onto the road sustaining serious head injuries.

At the time of the accident, late on Friday, the man was reportedly driving the vehicle on the road, and no other vehicles were involved.

The man was airlifted to Auckland Hospital.

Police say the vehicle wasn't road-legal and it's been seized for mechanical examination. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

"Whether alcohol was involved will be part of our investigation. The vehicle was not road-legal and we've seized it so it can be mechanically examined," said Inspector Mark Fergus, of Waitemata Police.

"An investigation is also under way into who actually owns the mechanical bar stool."
