A MAN was found dead in a car parked beside the smouldering wreck of a Hampton home that had burned to the ground yesterday.

Police arrived at the Grapetree Rd property about 12.30pm and found the man dead in the front seat of a utility vehicle.

The vehicle was about 50 metres from the home and did not catch fire.

Toowoomba Police Detective Inspector Darren Smith said neither the death nor the fire was being treated as suspicious.

"Police located the male deceased at the scene of the house fire," he said.

"He was found in a car nearby the fire.

"It's still very early days... so we'll be treating it with an open mind."

Twisted sheets of corrugated iron roofing and a pile of burning embers were all that remained of the home.

Det Insp Smith said police would keep guard over the property tonight to continue forensic investigations tomorrow.

"It's too early to be speculating about the cause of death," he said.

It is believed firearms were present on the property.

The man has not yet been identified.
