Fine for falling asleep at the wheel
A MAN fell asleep at the wheel and crashed on the Ipswich Mwy after a big night, a court heard.
Police attended the single vehicle crash on October 22 at 1pm and noted damage to the front of Hendrix Siaosi Puleaga's car.
Witnesses told police they saw Puleaga driving normally and then saw him start drifting to the left side shoulder barrier, before slowly swerving back and colliding with the right side barrier.
Puleaga told police he had fallen asleep at the wheel.
He said he had been driving to his partner's house and "remembered driving in the left lane" before waking up to find his vehicle colliding with the wall and bouncing back to the other wall.
Puleaga pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, and without displaying his green P-plates, when he appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court.
The 20-year-old told the court he was sorry for his actions and "should have taken a nap", or at least pulled over and rested before continuing to drive.
Magistrate Michael Quinn warned Puleaga that "a motor vehicle is a most dangerous weapon" and fined him $500.
