Man charged with teen girlfriend's murder

A man has been charged with murder after the body of his 18-year-old girlfriend was found in the NSW town of Maitland.

Jordan Brodie Miller, 20, was arrested in the front yard of a home in Metford about 1.30am on Saturday.

Police then discovered the body of Emerald Wardle inside.

Nine News said Miller, who still lived with his parents, had been heard screaming by neighbours and would undergo mental health tests.

One neighbour said he heard "something about demons", The Daily Telegraph reported.

"(He) was out in the front yard and there was a short scuffle prior to him being arrested," Detective Inspector Ranald Urquhart told reporters.

Police said the relationship between Miller and Ms Wardle had only been in its early stages.

"Police obviously take alleged domestic violence situations very seriously and I would ask people to report any incidents of domestic violence to the police," Detective Inspector Urquhart said.

"Domestic violence can involve people of all ages."

Miller was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday.
