Man allegedly punched driver in ride sharing fee stoush

A FIGHT over a fare involving a ride-sharing service on the Gold Coast has left a 26-year-old man to face court after he allegedly punched the driver in the face.

Police said they had charged a 26-year-old man following an incident at Varsity Lakes in the early hours of Sunday morning.

At around 2:50am, a man and woman were picked up by a driver of a ride-sharing service on Orchid Avenue, Surfers Paradise.

A short time later on University Drive, Varsity Lakes, it will be alleged that the male passenger and driver became involved in a verbal argument over the fare.

At this point the man got out of the vehicle and allegedly kicked the passenger side door twice and then the driver's side door.

It will be further alleged that the man then punched the 23-year-old driver in the face through the open window of the vehicle.

The driver attempted to flee from the man and ran a short way down University Drive, when the man allegedly assaulted him again before leaving in the vehicle.

The vehicle was later located damaged on Assembly Drive, Varsity Lakes.

A 26-year-old Varsity Lakes man has been charged with one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.  He is scheduled to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on February 26.
