Mamie celebrates 90th birthday in style

WHEN Mamie Brewer started school at St Mary's Primary School in 1930, Ipswich looked very different to what we know today.

The school was just a small sandstone building beside St Mary's Catholic Church and is now considerably larger, with many more buildings and classrooms.

Born on November 11, 1925, Mrs Brewer, who celebrated her 90th birthday last week, has certainly seen plenty of change while living in Ipswich.

When she was born, Mrs Brewer's parents lived in a Raceview farmhouse built in about 1853 by her great-grandfather Michael Fitzpatrick and his wife Mary Dooley, both of whom came to Ipswich from Ireland.

The family moved to Martin St, Woodend when Mrs Brewer was a child and she has lived there ever since.
Like her great-grandparents, Mrs Brewer was married at St Mary's Church in Ipswich, not far from where she went to school.

In 1948 she married Bill Brewer, who was well known for his skill at rugby league and athletics.

Their children, Mary, Bill Jnr and Mick, attended last week's birthday celebrations, along with Mrs Brewer's youngest brother, Bryan Fitzpatrick as well as more than 60 family and friends, many of whom travelled from Townsville, Perth and Sydney.

Mrs Brewer celebrated her 90th birthday with a party at Mater Dei Mass Centre, Sadliers Crossing.

Mayor Paul Pisasale presented Mrs Brewer with a certificate of congratulations from the City of Ipswich along with a beautiful flower arrangement.

The 90-year-old also received letters of congratulation from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Member for Blair Shayne Neumann.
