Major works start on $43 million Bunnings Warehouse

CONSTRUCTION of the Bunnings Warehouse Toowoomba North has started with Hutchinson Builders beginning ground-works for the new warehouse.     

Located on the corner of Ruthven and Bridge Sts, the $43 million development is expected to open at the end of next year.

About 180 jobs are expected to be created in the local community after the opening, offering strong employment opportunities for local residents, the company says.

More than 250 construction jobs will also be created throughout the build.

Once completed, the new warehouse will have a total area of more than 17,000sq m, comprising the main store, indoor timber trade sales area, building materials and landscape supplies yard and outdoor nursery.

The development will also include an indoor playground, cafe, and parking for more than 370 cars.

Bunnings General Manager Property, Andrew Marks said Bunnings was committed to supporting local communities and looked forward to continuing its support of the Toowoomba community.

He said Bunnings had invested about $43 million in the development including for fit-out and stock as well as upgrading the five-hectare site.

The warehouse is being constructed at the site of the former Toowoomba foundry.

When the development was approved by the council the heritage-listed Railway Hotel and sawtooth sheds were earmarked to be demolished.

The development included the retention of some heritage buildings including the original administration building, cylinder head building and machine shed.

Mr Marks said as part of the development, demolition and remediation had recently taken place to prepare the site for the new warehouse.

He  said in line with Bunnings' commitment to sustainability the new store would implement energy and water saving design features, including energy efficient fluorescent and LED lighting and rainwater harvesting tanks that would be used to irrigate the nursery and service the warehouse's amenities.

A solar boosted hot water system would also reduce energy consumption.

Mr Marks said the store would offer a wide range of leading Australian brands and products along with specialised trade supplies to meet the community's needs.

He said local customers would enjoy the convenience of the widest range of home improvement and outdoor living products backed by the best service.
